Private William John Hylands

 

The background of this North Irish Horseman is not known for certain. It seems likely, however, that he was the William John Hylands born on 11 May 1893 at Tullyheron, Waringstown, County Down, the third of seven children of weaver (later poulterer) George Hylands and his wife Anne Jane (nee Hodgens). By the time of the 1911 Census he was living at Tullyheron with his parents and five siblings and working as a poulterer.

Hylands enlisted in the North Irish Horse between 26 February and 3 March 1914 (No.911 – later Corps of Hussars No.71155). He embarked for France with A Squadron on 17 August 1914, seeing action on the retreat from Mons and advance to the Aisne.

He remained with the regiment throughout the war. On 9 February 1919 he was demobilised and transferred to Class Z, Army Reserve.
